Goldfields Dictionaries

It’s a much anticipated annual event for Cromwell year 4 pupils.  Once again, all year 4 pupils will be  presented with Illustrated Dictionaries, by the Rotary Club of Cromwell. Each dictionary is personalised with the pupils name. In this age of instant google-fed information, It was a pleasure to see how eager the pupils were to open and start investigating their books.

The event was organised by Nick Wood, Youth and New Generations Director of Cromwell Rotary.

High Visibility Means Safer Students

As part of the continuing commitment of Cromwell Rotary to road safety, all primary age pupils in Cromwell will be given high visibility vests

At Cromwell Primary School’s assembly on 9 May, Rotarian Craig Lunn explained to pupils the reason behind wearing the vests, and the pupils thanked those involved for their generosity.

The funding for the vests was supported by Contact Energy, the Otago Motor Club Trust and the Rotary Club of Cromwell.

Wanaka Rotary put the Action in Rotary over Easter Weekend

As always, Easter was a busy time for Cromwell Rotary with Rotarians and friends contributing more than 1000 volunteer hours to local community events.

Activities ranged from selling High Country Salmon to locals in preparation for Easter; parking visiting aircraft at Warbirds over Wanaka; helping with gate duties at Highlands MotorSport Park; and showing people through Brewery Creek Tunnel DR560 in the Cromwell Gorge.

Cromwell’s 20th annual ‘Rotary Fishing Classic’ competition was held at Lake Dunstan in Central Otago

Cromwell’s 20^th annual ‘Rotary Fishing Classic’ competition was held at Lake Dunstan in Central Otago, NZ on Sunday November 17, 2013. It was a brilliant day with 164 entries and 102 fish weighed-in.

 

Rotary Club of Cromwell President Murray Kennedy presented prizes to David Wigg who was the winner of the heaviest fish overall at 1.644 kg. Whilst not winners, keen young participants Harvey and Millie O’Neill were also pleased with their catch. A traditional lolly scramble and the giving of certificates and prizes to all children, meant that no-one went away empty handed.

 

Over $5,000 of prizes were on offer, including a helicopter flight for three. We thank the Begg Security Group for being major supporters. We cannot list here all of the other sponsors, but with their generous and continued support, the Rotary Fishing Classic will last another 20 years.

Rotary 4WD

 

0n Sunday 5 January 2014, 21 trucks gathered at the Golden Gate for the annual Cromwell Rotary 4WD trip.

This year’s trip traversed both the Hawksburn and Cairnmuir Stations, allowing drivers access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the region. Along the way we learnt about ancient Moa hunting sites and had a picnic-lunch at an historic homestead (Hawksburn). The day ended with a bbq at Bannockburn inlet. Rotary thanks go to; DOC. Phillip McElroy (Hawksburn) and Alistair Hamilton (Cairnmuir), Webb’s Fruit, Murray Dennison and Bill Wilson (organisers) and all those who helped make this day great success.

Funds raised will assist Rotary with their local and international community works. We will do it all again next year; don’t miss it!

Riding the Lake

 

Another successful Rotary Ride the Lake was held on Sunday 13 November and organised by the Rotary Club of Cromwell. PM John Key acknowledges Rotarians good work

Whilst visiting the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell on 24 October, the Prime Minister took time from his busy schedule to meet local Rotary members. Volunteers from Cromwell Rotary, give their time to assist the park during its major events. Rotary members will be  helping with the electronic ticketing at the ‘Highlands 101’ event, on 8-10 November.  Funds raised by Rotary volunteers, end-up supporting local and international good-causes.  A great example of how Highlands Park is integrating into and supporting the local community.

Lake side clean up readies area for summer visitors

On Saturday the 21st September, people who had already spent a nervous time watching the two America’s Cup races early in the day now had the chance to spend some of that pent up nervous energy at the Cromwell Rotary annual ‘Lake-side Clean-up’ on Lake Dunstan. 

This event  smarten-ups the lake shore in time for the start of the summer holiday visitor season.  Rotarians with loppers, saws and brush-cutters, attack the annual growth of weeds and collect the fallen willow debris. They also collect the general rubbish left by a few uncaring visitors to our beautiful lakeside. The Lions and other local groups also get together and help perform this annual task. Luckily this year the weather was kind and many, many trailer loads were carted off to the local tip for recycling.

Fun and Funds

Rotary Club of Cromwell members and partners at their changeover dinner held at Northburn Station in New Zealand on June 21 joined the world fight against Polio by making the End Polio Now ‘this close’ sign (see http://thisclose.endpolio.org/en) and raised funds to help eradicate Polio.  Cromwell Rotary will also help local schools to organise their own ‘this close’ Polio fundraising days and add their images to the world’s biggest commercial.
