RLI Down Under

The inspirational Rotary Leadership Institute breakfast in Wellington, NZ, on December 6 during Rotary Zones 7B and 8 Institute and the combined District 9940 Conference was a sell out for 140 delegates from the 27 NZ and Australian-based districts.
Past Rotary International President Bill Boyd’s thought-provoking presentation was from the perspective of a new Rotarian who had been sent along to RLI discussion-based training by his President without knowing much about it, wondering if the RLI trainers would be like Boxer dogs whose expressions don’t change much, yapping Terriers, or preferred one year-old house trained Labradors!

Rotary International Director Guiller Tumangan,
The Rotary Foundation Trustee Jackson Hsieh and
fellow TRF Trustee Ian Riseley
Mr Boyd then joined the International RLI panel that also included The Rotary Foundation Trustee PRIT Ian Riseley from Australia, TRF Trustee Jackson Hsieh from Taiwan, RI Director Guiller Tumangan from the Philippines, RLI Faculty Trainer Rob Crabtree from NZ, and International RLI Vice-Chair Australia, NZ and Oceania Cathy Roth from Australia who answered questions about RLI in their parts of the Rotary world.

RLI, NZ and Pacific Islands Division Chair Beryl Robinson gave an update about the state of RLI in that region where all six NZ-based districts frequently run RLI Part 1, 2 and 3 courses. District 9920 was the first district in Australasia to facilitate the popular RLI Graduate program that has been offered annually for the past three years. NZ-based Districts 9910 and 9920 are now rolling out RLI into their Pacific Islands, including Norfolk Island, Fiji and French Polynesia.

19 of the 21 districts in Australia hold RLI courses and hopefully the remaining two districts will join RLI by the end of this Rotary year.

Following on from Mrs Robinson’s involvement on the International RLI Online Courses Committee, it is planned to trial distance learning in conjunction with Mrs Roth and an Australian e-club in 2015, which will also open up opportunities to get RLI into remote areas and the South West Pacific where it is difficult to get to RLI courses in a main centre.

RLI breakfasts are highlights of Rotary Institutes down under, so they will be continued at November’s Rotary Zone 7B Institute in Nelson, NZ, and an RLI lunch will be held before Rotary Zone 8 Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

Inspiration, information and understanding - this course is a must do

The following is feedback from last Sunday's (15 June 2014) Rotary Leadership Institute Part1 , Part 3 and Graduate courses in District 9920.  This serves to illustrate what the participants get out of attending.  Participants were from District 9910 and 9920 and were Rotarians  ranging from quite new to Rotary through to long serving.

“RLI has enabled me to connect with other Rotarians & share ideas on what we could do better” – Denise, Rotary Club of Auckland

“RLI is a foundation that every Rotarian should be given to attend as it improves your understanding of what you can achieve through the power of Rotary.  RLI has inspired me to step into district roles to make a difference” – Bart, Rotary Club of Manukau City Sunrise

“RLI has broadened my knowledge of Rotary & introduced me to other like-minded Rotarians in District 9920.  Thanks.” – Richard, Rotary Club of Botany East Tamaki

“RLI is an informative interaction group that builds a greater knowledge of Rotary.  It helps focus on your involvement, & the part each member personally participates in their club.” – Neville, Rotary Club of Mt Eden

“RLI provided the opportunity to step back & review the results & expectations we have for our Rotary service.  Discussion with like-minded people who challenge the norm was exceptional & refreshing” – Mark, Rotary Club of Auckland East

“RLI has given me some ideas on how to be a more effective Rotarian.  RLI has taken some of the mystery & ambiguity out of Rotary & its terms.  RLI has made me think about what Rotary is & what being a Rotarian means.” Jeanette, Rotary Club of Otahuhu

“RLI has given me the opportunity to learn more about Rotary, exchange ideas with like-minded Rotarians, & look at challenges other clubs have & how things can be handled differently.” – Jan, Rotary Club of Mt Eden

“Today the graduate programme was the most valuable of all the sessions … What a coup Rotary has made having you 2 [Ingrid and Beryl] as Facilitators. Today was a consolidation day for me. Shall give it my best shot!!” – Mary Ann, Rotary Club of Highbrook

“RLI & me – kept my fire alive!”  At the end he added, “I’ve really enjoyed RLI, so what about an RLI alumni programme?” - Craig, Rotary Club of Auckland

I want the networking opportunities, the fellowship and the satisfaction ...

The following participant's feedback from today's Rotary Leadership Institute Part 1 course in Auckland is a follow-on from the previous post below at http://rotarystories-nzandpacific.blogspot.co.nz/2013/05/the-ahas-much-more-than-expected.html:

"Personally I have gained a much better understanding of Rotary International, how it is structured, how our district fits into the organisation and how Highbrook Rotary Club can play its part. The participants ranged in Rotary experience from two months to over 30 years, and the ages from what seemed like kids to me but in reality they would have been 20 ish, to golden oldies like myself.

The common thread joining these people was that they all wanted to make a difference, and have a good time doing it. A great deal of the training was experiential working in teams of three or four. The interaction with people from other clubs was valuable and it was obvious that the knowledge of some Rotarians (with a few years in Rotary) was little more than my own, which made me feel less of a newbie. At the other end of the scale there were some extremely knowledgeable Rotarians. If I had to define just one single outcome of today’s session, it has confirmed that Rotary is where I want to belong.

I want the networking opportunities, the fellowship and the satisfaction that whatever small part I play, it is in the knowledge that I’m contributing to improving someone’s life, somewhere, somehow."
- Rotary Club of Highbrook (chartered on 17 December 2012) Director Cy Holmes

First RLI Graduate Class Held in New Zealand

Today Sun 24th Mar I attended the first RLI Graduate class held in NZ. There were 7 of us, each of us having completed the earlier 3 days of RLI.

As always RLI is very inspiring with both Ingrid Waugh & Beryl Robinson our wonderful facilitators for the day.

It was amazing learning different skills in how to make our own Rotary Clubs get a ranking of 10 out of 10 and become an EXTRAORDINARY Club, not just an ordinary club.  We ranked our own clubs an average 8 out of 10, which is really quite impressive, but we all wanted to do something new and exciting to lead our clubs into the future, and we have agreed to make sure we,

1. Make our clubs a vibrant community service organization.
2. Make sure we making an impact in our local communities
3. Are we following our motto ‘Service Above Self’
4. Make sure we grow and expand our membership of our Clubs.

VISION WITHOUT ACTION IS MERELY A DREAM
ACTION WITHOUT VISION JUST PASSES THE TIME
VISION WITH ACTION CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.     Joel Barker

The graduate class with facilitators Beryl and Ingrid.

To all Rotary Club members – if you get the chance do go on the 3 day RLI Course,  now a 4 day RLI course – you will never regret it.

Rotary Leadership Institute - new curriculum format

There are three clear foci under the new curriculum:
Part 1 focuses on the Rotarian
Part 2 focuses on the Club
Part 3 focuses on the Rotary journey

For more information go to www.rli.rotarysouthpacific.org

All New Zealand-based districts run RLI courses.  These are open to all Rotarians though their club - the club pays for the Rotarian.

Rotary Leadership Institute is a Rotarian development forum.  The three days are taken in sequence and course dates are run two or three times as year in most districts.

Rotary Leadership Institute starts in District 9970

District 9970 is the last of the New Zealand Rotary District to embrace the Rotary Leadership Institute Training programme.  The inaugural training, one day programme opened in Nelson on the 10th of June 2012 at the Te Tari Maori Studies rooms at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology at 8.45am on a chilly Sunday morning.

As a start up group, ten participants from the seven of the Rotary Clubs in the greater Nelson area attended.  Facilitators DGN John Rickard from Ashburton Club, IPDG Margaret Reeve, and AG Valda Cordes from the Riccarton club, in Christchurch, travelled up to join with local PDG Rex Morris, from Nelson, for the training.

Part one of the syllabus was completed in Nelson and another Part one is programmed for Ashburton on the 15th of July. Timings for future training and the Part two and Part three aspects are yet to be arranged but they will probably follow the regional set up, with additions to include Rotarians in Christchurch, The West Coast and the Marlborough area.
The training promotes Rotary knowledge for Rotarians, and covers the subjects of Leadership characteristics and team building, Rotary beyond the club, Service projects, Membership retention, and The Rotary Foundation.

District 9970 is building on the success of the other Rotary Districts in New Zealand and Australia and also the other 141 Districts throughout the world that have adopted this grassroots Rotary development programme for Rotarians by Rotarians.

One participant observed, after the training, that he had learnt how little he knew about the workings of Rotary, leadership, management and the history of Rotary, and that he had now become very interested in Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation.

A Rotarian Development Forum underway in District 9970

Last weekend a Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training weekend was held in Christchurch to train new facilitators for the popular RLI courses. Those being trained came from District 9970 (the host district), 9910, 9920 and 9940.  This now means that District 9970 has the facilitators to get their courses underway and planning for the first course can commence.  All six New Zealand-based districts are now involved.

PDG Judy Bain's comments reflect the success of the weekend:  "Thanks so much to everyone for the wonderfully warm welcome to RLI.  It was a fantastic weekend, superb company, food, education and hospitality."  From a highly respected and experienced Rotary trainer this is high praise indeed.

To learn more about RLI, what it is and when it is being held please refer to http://www.rli.rotarysouthpacific.org/ and your district training and / or RLI Committee.

Being a Rotarian training forum, RLI is suitable for any Rotarian wanting to learn more about Rotary and become more involved in Rotary at any level - just get your club to put you forward for the next course.
